Making My Crappy House Look Less Crappy with New Siding. Part 3

BatmanShop

Yeah, today might have been the coldest day of the Fall so far, about 42d degrees, so this outside work is becoming increasingly challenging, and I’ve still got so much to do! Bet I’m dressing right; check out what I’m wearing.

These come from my t-shirt site, and this is a thing I created very recently for the cold season. The great thing about that site is you can manipulate a design in size or location put the design on any number of objects, so voila!

Continuing with this siding installation, I’d like to address things like windows and doors. Not having a scaffold is tough. And we’ll probably have to get one or make one before it’s all over, because going up and down a ladder, can be tough on the feet plus just lower body fatigue and soreness.

One thing I should also mention is you’ll need to remove things like a mail box, address numbers, TV cable lines, phone and power lines. I would say do it as you go, I wouldn’t recommend having all that stuff hanging at once. Keep connectors if possible and recall the general location. Or in my case I’m using new address number and a new mailbox-and I intend to change the location a little, but for now I’ve got the old mailbox and canopy still sitting there.

J channel is the trim that goes around the windows, doors and any other major items. Here Hank is using a grinder to do quick even cuts. You don’t cut through all the way just 2 out of the 3 sides, then bend it around the object you’re encircling.

As we were making our way around the window I saw this odd adjustment (and yeah I KNOW the window frames look like crap but I’ve actually installed new ones from the inside, and just wait ‘till the end-it’ll look great).

The window sills were about half inch wider then the general width of the windows, so Hank had done a lot of work to accommodate. So I said, “let’s have a talk. I don’t like the way this looks. Does it have to be like this?” And he explained the sill situation. And I asked if there was any solution to get it look neater. After all I’ve got to sell this house for a profit. And he said we could cut it. So I went and got this.

And the next one came out like this.

And as we moved on to the next stage, I just told him he had more knowledge on this project, so I had to depend on him-not just the nuts and bolts know-how, BUT to also kinda speak up before we do anything where we had multiple approaches on of how we can do something. Particular if it concerned costs or aesthetics. Safety and quality is something we’d already talked about being a high priority but these new concerns are also now part of the overall process.
