Skrulls! Marvel is About to Kick Off This Years Summer Event

Has it been 2 years? I think it’s been 2 years since I resumed my interests in comic books. I haven’t gotten any comic subscriptions yet, but you don’t need a comic book subscription to keep up to date. And so I read on. It was last summer I think that I first learned about this idea of a Marvel comics “Summer Event.” A crossover of comic book titles; where some central story might involve Spider-man, Iron Man, the X-Men Captain America and/or the Avengers. In fact last year just about every single character in the Marvel Universe had some role to play in the Marvel “Civil War.”

The problem I had as a reader was I was just getting into comic books again so I was trying to play catch up and reading tons of back issues just to understand the landscape that was going through change via the Marvel CW. So it was a lot of reading. “Luckily” my girlfriend had just left me, so a) I had a lot of time and b) was in SEVERE need of a distraction. I really wouldn’t even know where to find a comic book store anymore. But when I was a youngster I’d travel pretty crazy distances to get to one-and for whatever reason I usually had to travel to several. But one of the big changes since those days is digital comics. I enjoyed the hell out of the Marvel comics summertime event last year. I did. It have read people saying they thought it was too spread out, or they didn’t like the ending, or any number of things. But I thought it had heart. At the time I didn’t know about writers like Ed Brubaker, Mark Miller, or Brian Bendis. And certainly not any of the comic book artists. But I’m up to speed now. So as THIS year’s event kicks off I’m totally with the program. In fact this year’s battle with the Skrulls is an organic growth out of the CW. See, in the Marvel Universe all the characters have been asking each other HOW could things have gotten so out of hand that they would fight each other. And along comics this awesome and convenient explanation of having an old comic book villain like the Skrull Empire be the culprit. Hell, they’re shape shifters! That explains everything. So, on the one hand you kinda know exactly where the story is going, but HOW they do it will be fun.

It’s weird because over at DC comics they’ve been having not just summer events, but WHOLE YEAR events . DC comics in fact is shocked the hell out of my by being as interesting as they are. I NEVER, ever, ever read DC comics in a regular way. I was into the Flash, and I was into Batman and Robin. Not Batman the solo detective, but “Batman and Robin.” But I have been so blown away by DC comics these last 2 years I just can’t believe it. I’ll have to write a whole piece on that. But I will say I’ve really been enjoying their stories, but I didn’t like the Crisis event they had last summer because at the end they just reversed it all. The whole thing was supposed to be about getting rid of multiple earths and then at the end they said ok, here’s 52 earths again! So it was crazy. I think I found what they might be doing this summer.

  1. Hi! Civil war was pretty epic but i wasn’t too thrilled on the ending but I’m really excited about secret invasion ^_^
There has been only one issue and everything went crazy.

  2. Hey Lady!
Glad you made it over here. Yeah, I think the skrull thing came so organiclly (from the ashes!) of the Civil War thing that it just had a much stronger launching pad than CW. It has a context.

And context makes everything mean more. You see a guy get hit by a car-well it’s too bad. But then you find out he was coming to see his long lost mother who put him up for adoption, and she went to the same high school he ended up going to, and the gym teacher is the one he punched out, but turns out the teacher is the one that got her pregnant so really its his father…..
    You get my drift here.

  3. lol yeah exactly

  4. See? We’re on the same wavelength?
